Raphael Medical Centre

Hildenborough, 2016

The centre is the only hospital in the UK that is based on anthroposophical treatments and medicines. Housed in a 19th mansion in Kent this commission was to provide a new 24 bed unit for severe brain injury cases on the site of a derelict school in the grounds. The project failed to gain planning permission due to an organised opposition from nearby residents, including the local vicar. They were under the impression that vegative state and comatosed patients might be dangerous. Consequently, Tonbridge and West Malling DC planning department changed their position resulting from a positive pre-application to a recommendation for refusal, which was then endorsed by the planning committee.
